Jo Brook
Clinical Lead - Research and Development
Highly Specialist Physiotherapist
Jo is an experienced Paediatric Physiotherapist with over 25 years of both clinical and management experience in the NHS and university teaching. She has worked both in community teams and in tertiary centres at both Great Ormond Street and The Royal London, and has a track record of leading service development and improvement.
Whilst her primary skills lie in neuro-development and movement disorders, she has also worked in paediatric orthopaedic and musculo-skeletal services. The majority of her clinical experience has been with 0-19 year olds with profound and complex needs, although she also has experience working with adults with learning difficulties and physical needs.
She is passionate about maximising an individual’s movement and independence, and works closely with family, carers and school staff to enable this. Jo is also aware of the constraints of family and school life and will always seek to ensure physio programmes fit within the young person’s everyday life. In addition she is a skilled Moving and Handling Risk Assessor and will ensure the safety of both the young person and their carers at all times.
She has extensive management experience of community teams and managed a Children’s Physio Service to Schools for several years. During that time Jo worked closely with colleagues in Education to devise a Moving and Handling strategy and system of risk assessments. She also worked with the multi-disciplinary team and partners in schools to develop joint Therapy Standards for staff going in to both mainstream and specialist provision.
Her most recent post was managing a Community Children’s Physio and OT teams. She saw through a benchmarking exercise and initiated some practice changes as a result of this. Jo also supported the team in the early part of the pandemic to move to more online working and assisted with prioritisation, and with the procurement of PPE, to ensure young people who required face to face appointments were still seen.
Jo always works collaboratively, with other professionals and schools and carers, to ensure the best outcome for each individual.
